Journal: Saturday, 6/13/09

Week In Review:

Home from art fair in Columbia. Got the van totally unloaded.

Set up part of the canopy frame and dried the canopy side panels. We had a little rain Sunday morning at the show. The canopy tops got dry during the afternoon, but we'd rolled up the side panels to open open our booths for sales. Being rolled up, it was impossible for them to dry. They dried quickly hung up in the heat and breeze here at home.

Jo harvested a huge head of broccoli from the garden.

We finished weeding another bed out in the garden. Jo set out some tomato and pepper transplants she'd purchased. Normally, we have about three beds devoted to tomatoes and peppers, but are cutting back this year, mainly because of our late start but also because we produce more tomatoes and peppers than we need. We still have tomato sauce and frozen peppers from last year.

Jo set up cages around the peppers and tomatoes. Then, I installed the fence posts that support the cages. The hardest part was getting them out of the ground from last year's location.

We began cleaning up another garden bed. Pulling a few weeds from a bed is one thing, but we are removing waist high grasses that have deep roots. It's slow going.
Friday I made a trip into town. This was a fairly quick and easy town run. Mainly I needed to get the checks from our last show into the bank and return the books on tape to the library before they were past due. A thunderstorm moved through while I was at the library -- high wind and heavy rain, but small and moved through quickly. Instead of getting drenched, I just spent a little time on one of the library's computers.

Our weather has been very unsettled this week. I've lost count of how many little thundershowers we've experienced. All have been small and not too severe. We've only gotten maybe an 1.5" of rain out of them. We still are not out of the unsettle weather cycle. When we weren't experiencing a thundershower, it's been hot and humid.

Friday was the end of our television reception. We went from being able to receive one fuzzy analog signal (Arkansas Educational TV) to receiving no digital signals. On Saturday I mounted our antenna on a short mast and crawled up onto the roof's peak with it. We did three scans with the antenna oriented in different directions, but the digital converter could pick up no signal.

Journal Through Monday, 1/05/09

Thursday, 1/1/09:

► Weather Summary: High = 50ºF. Low = 24ºF. Mostly sunny. A gusty south wind made things a bit nippy in the early morning, but it laid later in the day.

► Several years ago we replaced New Year's Eve parties with a New Year's Day hike. In the beginning we hiked with several friends, but over the years the number of hikers has dwindled. This year for a variety of reasons no one else was available for hiking, so Jo and I went alone. We hiked the Hemmed In Hollow falls trail in the Ponca Wilderness Area of the Buffalo National River. There's really no need for me to go into a great deal of detail about our hike here since I intend to make a post or two (or three) over on Nature in the Ozarks. I'll just say that it was a fairly strenuous hike to make in one afternoon. Between the hike, driving to and from the trail head and a brief visit to Walmart for dog food our first first day of the new year was a busy one.

Friday, 1/2/09:

► Weather Summary: High = 50ºF. Low = 24ºF. Weather started out as partly cloudy then slowly degraded to totally overcast and damp with a moderately gusty south wind blowing.

► The "big event" of the day was cutting a little more firewood. I went up the road to where my neighbor thinned small trees along the road during the fall. The diameter of most of that wood is small, but that means it doesn't have to be split. Jo and the dogs joined me after I'd cut for a while and helped load the Nissan.

► I was really proud that I only felt a little sore from yesterday's strenuous hike. However, when I got up there slinging my chainsaw around, I discovered I got tired much quicker than normal. Even though my muscles weren't sore, I reckon they hadn't fully recovered and were still tired. I still managed to get close to a little truck load cut, loaded, home, unloaded and stacked. The log hoop on the porch is full again and the amount of wood in our racks is growing.

Saturday, 1/3/09:

► Weather Summary: High = 69ºF. Low = 52ºF. Definitely what you'd call unseasonably warm today. We didn't even need a fire in the wood stove. Morning overcast, but contrary to our original forecast, the sky became mostly clear during the PM. A moderately gusty south wind blew for most of the day, but laid late.

► PM Walk: No cows. We haven't seen them around for a for a couple of days. We haven't seen any tracks in the road which would indicate Jerry Joe moved the cows to another pasture. I guess they've moved themselves to another section of this pasture. Good riddance.

Sunday, 1/4/09:

► Weather Summary: High = 62ºF. Low = 29ºF. The high temperature for the day is deceptive since it occurred very early in the morning -- like around midnight. Most of the day was overcast with a blustery north wind blowing. The temperature for most of our daylight hours was in the thirties.

Monday, 1/5/09:

► Weather Summary: High = 31ºF. Low = 25ºF. Overcast and funky all day. A brief period of freezing rain during the early afternoon. Fortunately, that didn't last for long -- just long enough to ice up the front steps and cover the van's windows.

► Trip into town: It had been about a week and a half since either Jo or I made a regular trip into town, and we were running a little low on several staples -- including coffee -- so I made a trip this afternoon. Among other things the trip included: Paying both the water and electric bills, getting a couple of chainsaw chains sharpened, buying kerosene for Jo's heater in the studio and buying food for us, the birds and our rabbits.

► I drove the van into town because Jo also needed a couple of 8' flourescent tubes for her studio light fixture. There was no way I could get those safely home via the little pickup. While in town, I filled the van with $1.69/gallon gasoline -- up 20 cents a gallon since January 1st.

► I got my saw chains sharpened at a place called E-Z Discount. When we first moved up here, E-Z Discount was a little place that mainly stocked slightly damaged and discontinued building materials, chainsaws and accessories, a little general hardware and sold tires. About ten years ago, the store moved into a much larger building and became a much larger outlet for hardware, electrical, plumbing, etc. They also sold auto parts and expanded their tire facilities.

► I used to routinely purchase my tires from E-Z Discount, but for some reason unknown to me that part of their operation dwindled over the years. Perhaps the competition was too severe and their profit not large enough. I don't know, but I stated buying my tires elsewhere.

► I hadn't even been into the store in a year or more and was surprised to see that much of the space originally devoted to hardware was now devoted to surplus or damaged food and other merchandise. (The food isn't really "damaged" although a few of the cans are a little bent.) Besides getting my two saw chains sharpened, I ended up buying five pounds of coffee beans for $13.00. I know the price is good. I just hope the coffee is decent. I'll end up drinking it regardless.

► My final stop was at Harps' Grocery Store. They were out of bananas and potatoes. Having only one grocery store in town is such great fun.

Journal: Monday, 12/22/08

►  Heading down to our coldest night thus far this winter.  (Clear, moderate northwest wind and 12ºF/-11ºC @ midnight)

►  Down to 8ºF/-13ºC @ 4:30 AM.  I don't even like saying "single digit temperatures" much less experiencing them.

►  Sky becoming mostly cloudy.  18ºF/-7ºC @ 11 AM.

►  Jo made a routine trip into town.  She waited until early afternoon to depart, giving our temperatures a chance to warm up a bit, but they still did not get warm enough for the Nissan pickup to start.  I had to give the battery a little boost with the battery charger before it would crank.

►  Cut firewood this afternoon. The neighbor's cows came and watched but never offered to lend a hoof and help.  I'm cutting alongside the road where Jerry Joe cut some trees in early fall.  On one hand, these trees are very easy to access and I don't have to tote the cut sections very far to load them into the truck.  On the other hand, most are not the straight, limbless specimens that make for easy splitting.  They are also still very green.  Most are fairly small in diameter.

►  I cut the sections short to aid splitting.  Where there were a lot of limbs coming off the truck, the sections I cut were more like discs or chunks -- only six inches or so in length.

►  Getting a fire started with green wood is extremely difficult to impossible.  That's the reason I really needed to start cutting more wood before we used all the seasoned firewood on hand.  Once a fire is going good, green wood will burn.  You just have to load up the stove with wood.  The wood on bottom burns which dries out the wood on top so that it will burn.  Gravity does the rest.  The only trick is that you must anticipate the heat output you will want from the stove two or three hours in advance.

►  Damp south wind kicking up. NOAA says freezing rain is on the way. (23ºF/-5ºC @ midnight)

Journal: Friday, 12/12/08

►  Mostly clear, calm wind and 33ºF/.5ºC @ midnight.

►  Bedtime. Mostly clear, calm and 32ºF/0ºC @ 4:00 AM.

►  Looking good here in the Ozarks on this Friday morning. Clear, calm and 44ºF/6ºC @ 10:00 AM. NOAA says it isn’t going to last, though.

►  In honor of this last day of predicted sunshine for a while, Jo washed two loads of clothes and hung them on the clothesline.

►  I really must make a trip into town for provisions today.  Jo has only one apple left in the crisper.  Jo gets very cranky when she runs out of apples.

► I made the trip to town Friday afternoon with no problem, except for that giant sucking sound of money leaving my wallet.

►  Our ISP went down early this evening, so no Internet for me.  Boo!  Hiss!

Journal: Monday, 12/01/08

►  A very light dusting of snow is being blown around by a gusty north wind.  29ºF/-1ºC @ 1:30  AM.

►  Time to throw a couple more logs into the wood stove and then go to bed.  (28ºF/-2ºC @ 4:45 AM)

►  Blog Post on Nature in the Ozarks:  Buck Deer in the Garden

►  So far today is much better than yesterday -- and better than today's forecast too. (Partly cloudy, blustery north wind and 40ºF/4ºC @ noon)

►  Unfortunately, the weather seems to be coming into compliance with our forecast. Clouds are moving in and we appear to be heading toward overcast. (40ºF/4ºC @ 1 PM)

►  Jo made a run into town.  She had some orders to mail plus routine grocery shopping, etc.  Jo said the line at the post office was long, but she'd used Click-N-Ship and her packages were ready to be mailed.  All she had to do was hand them to the clerk, which is exactly what she did.  Some of the other people in line acted as if they did not appreciate her jumping to the front of the line, but she really didn't.  She stacked her packages on the counter in front of a closed clerk's window.  She didn't take up any of the one working clerk's time.  And, anyone who wants to spend the time online can use the Click-N-Ship service.

►  Jo also bought some "extra" food.  When we do Christmas Showcase down in Little Rock, we stay with a friend.  A couple of other artist also stay.  Everyone brings food and we have potluck meals in the evening after the show.  Jo is making King Ranch Chicken.

►  Spent several minutes looking for my knit cap before heading outside. Only when I gave up looking and decided to put on a ball cap instead did I discover the knit cap on my head. Nap time? (Still 40ºF/4ºC @ 3 PM)

►  Back from our afternoon walk. Can't believe I found a violet blooming.  (Varying between partly and mostly cloudy, moderate north wind and 35ºF/1ºC @ 5 PM.)

►  After alternating between partly and mostly cloudy all day, our skies finally cleared around sunset.  We got a good look at the conjunction of the moon, Venus and Jupiter.

►  Jo is loading her kiln for the last glaze firing before our last art fair of the season.  Not all the glazed pots will fit.  Which pots go into the kiln and which stay behind?  What are we going to sell this weekend?  (Mostly clear, light north wind and 30ºF/-1ºC @ 8 PM)

►  Last pre-show glaze firing underway. 29ºF/-1ºC @ 11 PM

Journal: Monday, 11/10/08

►  Finished working in the shop for the day. (43ºF/6ºC @ midnight)

►  Our weather is rapidly taking a turn for the worse. A gusty south wind is pumping up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The end result is forecast to be rain for a couple of days. Mostly cloudy and 49ºF/9ºC @ 10:45 AM.

►  I need to start making progress toward a trip into town. (Overcast, moderately gusty south wind and 49ºF/9ºC @ noon)

It was close to three o'clock by the time I finally got away from the house and on my way into town.  I quickly made several of the routine stops after getting into town.  (Bank, feed store for propane, service station for kerosene, etc.)  I then backtracked to the county library where I checked out some books on tape for our upcoming road trip.

The major hang up on this trip to town was buying M&M.  Jo wants to make some trail mix/granola type mixture to munch on while we're on the road.  She needed two pounds of M&Ms.  In my mind, I can see large packages of M&M for sale everywhere, but when I needed to purchase a large package, there were none to be found in Marshall -- not at the Dollar Store, nor Fred's nor the Harps (grocery store).  I ended up going back to Fred's and buying two 14oz packages.  Those were the largest I could find.

Gasoline was down to #1.99/gallon.  That's the lowest price I've seen in these parts in a long time.

►  Drizzle off and on all afternoon. Steady light rain since shortly after sunset. (44ºF/6ºC @ midnight)

►  The show we'll be doing this weekend is Three Rivers Arts Festival down in Covington, LA.  (I did not get into this show, but will be making the trip in my capacity as a Porta-Potter and general purpose strong-backed assistant.)

Journal: Wednesday, 10/29/08

►  Midnight: Clear skies ... calm wind ... 39F/3C. A perfect time for a midnight snack, I'd say.

►  10 AM: Clear, sun-filled skies and 55F/12C. Need to finish up my "chores" on the computer so I can make a trip to town.

►  Up to 67F/19C @ noon. Warmer outside than inside the house. I reckon I should open a few windows.

►  Blog Post:  Nature in the Ozarks: A Little Miscellaneous

►  Re-provisioning required. Heading into town in T-shirt weather. 74F/23C @ 2:30 PM.

►  Back from town. Expensive re-provisioning trip since neither Jo nor I made the run for almost two weeks. 57F/14C @ 7 PM.

►  Nothing exciting going on in town.  I made all the usual stops:  Bank, post office, feed store and grocery store.  I also filled up Jo's kerosene jug since it's getting chilly enough she needs the kerosene heater in her studio.   Gasoline at the grocery store was $2.29/gallon, but the price of kerosene has not fallen.  It cost me a few cents shy of $20.00 to purchase four-and-a-half gallons.

►  Started Jo's kiln on a bisque firing. It's not supposed to get nearly as cold tonight as it has been. (54F/12C @ midnight)

Journal: Thursday, 10/16/08

Early Morning:

Light rain continues off and on.  56º @ 3:00 AM.

Late Morning:

Woke up to a ruckus of dog barking.  Rusty periodically checks the windows, seeing if there's anything outside requiring a barking session.  Bucket readily adds her voice to the din.  Seldom does she know exactly what she's barking at, but never lets that curb her enthusiasm.

We received a new cool front ushering in more fall-like temperatures.  A half inch of rain fell last evening and overnight.  58º @ noon.

Afternoon:

Made a routine trip into town.  We needed a few groceries and I needed to get the checks from our last show into the bank.  Absolutely nothing in town has changed since I was last there.  I lie!  The price of gasoline is down to $2.79/gallon.  It was $2.49/gallon in Missouri on Monday.

An odd aspect of shopping in a small town in a rural area is that you often keep encountering the same people as you visit various businesses and services.  Most everyone saves up his/her errands and combines several stops into one trip.  And, there are only a limited number of places where one can go when in town:  Feed store (1), grocery store (1), library (1), lumber yard (1), auto supply (2), bank (4).  (I don't know why we have so damned many banks in town.  You'd think there was a lot of money in the county and that's certainly not the case.)  Anyway, it's not at all unusual to encounter the same person in more than one establishment while in town.  Today, I saw the same friend three different times.

Evening:

The temperature dipped down to 47º.  I really ought to start thinking about cleaning out the stove pipe so that we can have a fire in the wood stove.

Sharp Curve

Another sharp curve on the way into town. Judging from the skid marks, it looks as if a truck was having problems getting slowed down. This curve can be especially tricky in the winter because there is a bridge right in the middle of it. Sometimes that bridge is icy even when the roadway isn't.

Heading Off The Mountain

Driving down off the mountain.

(Trip into town ... Friday ... 6/13/08)

Big, white fluffy clouds were above us for most of the day. Thunderstorms moved in around 7 PM. Lots of flashing and booming going on for a while. Telephone went out, but came back into service a few hours later. Storms had cleared our area by midnight. They became even more intense to our south. NOAA issued flash flood warnings for the counties down around Conway. We received 1.5 inches of rain total. A NOAA weather spotter in the Conway area reported 1.5 inches in 15 minutes.

Gravel Meets The Blacktop

Where the county gravel road meets the state's two-lane blacktop.

Had to make a trip into town (16 miles) and stock up on supplies. Unless we have special business of some sort to attend to, we go into town every week and a half or so. Neither Jo nor I likes to make the trip, so we take turns. Both of us made the trip today because we needed to take the dogs in for their annual vaccinations.
